A double scores success at Skryne on Sunday evening maintains Navan O’Mahonys bid to reach the A FL Division 1 decider.

Navan O’Mahonys …….. 2-8 Skryne …………….. 0-7

Having dropped a point at home to Wolfe Tones five days earlier, O’Mahonys responded with a positive performance that was rewarded with a seven-point success.
Shane Gillespie scored five points (four from play) including two in the run-up to half-time that restored O’Mahonys’ lead, which they maintained to the end.

Tenacious defending restricted Skryne to just seven scores and contibuted to the hosts’ tally of 12 wides (six in each half). In contrast, O’Mahonys had five.

Skryne lined out with Paddy O’Rourke and Ciaran Lenehan who figured on the Meath team at Croke Park the previous evening. They also had the best of the early exchanges.

O’Mahonys’ first scoring chance arrived in the third minute when Darragh Maguire was fouled and Paddy Smyth expertly dispatched the resultant penalty to the net for the game’s opening score.

Over the next 25 minutes O’Mahonys managed just one further score, a Henry Finnegan point, while Skryne got back on level terms twice.

Marcas Brennan did well to prevent Paddy O’Rourke netting but the county ‘keeper pointed when the ball was recycled. At the other end Felim O’Rourke did well to deny Smyth a second goal.

Gillespie’s first two points left O’Mahonys 1-3 to 0-4 ahead at the break. Within three minutes of resumption came the game’s second goal with Gary O’Brien close range effort given good by referee Patrick Neilis on the word of his umpires.

By the time Gillespie completed his tally in the 53rd minute – with assistance of sub David Bray – O’Mahonys were nine points clear.

Late scores from O’Rourke and Lenehan softened the look of the final scoreline was Skryne’s perspective but their hopes of reaching the league final had shipped a heavy knock.
