A FL Division 1: O’Mahonys make it two from two at Summerhill

By Club

Navan O’Mahonys posted their second win of the A FL Division 1 campaign with two points to spare at Summerhill on Sunday afternoon.

O’Mahonys …….. 0-13
Summerhill ……… 1-8

The SFC champions looked set to coast home when leading by 0-13 to 0-5 after 52 minutes. The concession of 1-3 without reply in the latter stages meant a nervous finale for the visitors.

Five points in as many minutes from the throw-in with four different players registering set O’Mahonys up. Alan Forde added the sixth in the 13th minute.

O’Mahonys were outscored by 0-3 to 0-1 in a 12-minute spell. Forde’s second score, with Ruairi O Coileain providing the assist left the visitors 0-8 to 0-3 ahead at the break.

Within 50 seconds of the restart, Stephen Bray’s second point from play further improved O’Mahonys’ position. Points from Padraig Geraghty and Barry Dardis (45) maintained Summerhill’s interest in the fixture.

Around this time Ruairi O Coileain’s goal attempt hit the cross bar before Marcas Brennan saved well from David Larkin.

David Nelson’s men responded with four points on the spin; David Bray (free), Stephen Bray (two frees) and O Coileain; to lead by 0-13 to 0-5 heading into the final quarter.

O’Mahonys didn’t add to their tally. When Sean Dalton fired home a 58th minute goal, some of the visiting contingent were recalling a Summerhill smash-and-grab raid that left the visitors empty-handed in a similar fixture three years ago almost to the day.

However, O’Mahonys regrouped to claim the points. Despite Summerhill’s late salvo, the tenacity of corner-back Conor Doyle is worthy of mention.
