A FL Div 1 – Seamus Heaney Cup

Navan O’Mahonys were relieved of the Seamus Heaney Cup on Sunday morning when hosts Simonstown prevailed in this annual meeting that doubled as an A FL Division 1 fixture.

Simonstown ……. 0-15
O’Mahonys …….. 0-12

The outcome consigned the A FL Division 1 holders to their third defeat on the spin while Simonstown made it three league wins from as many league fixtures.

The outcome was in marked contrast to the opening which saw O’Mahonys moved 0-5 to 0-0 clear inside eight minutes. Ruairi O Coileain set the scoreboard in motion within 15 seconds of the off.

Jake Regan (two), Henry Finnegan and Shane Gillespie added to O’Mahonys before a 20-minute scoring drought set in. In the interim, Simonstown tagged on eight points  and by the 23rd minute Colm O’Rourke’s charges were 0-8 to 0-5 clear.

Regan ended O’Mahonys scoring drought in the 28th minute while Simonstown lost full-back Ian O’Rourke with an apparent hamstring injury seconds later. The scoreboard read 0-8 to 0-6 to the ‘Gaels at the break.

The scoring rate dropped alarmingly in the third quarter with the A FL Division 1 and Heaney Cup holders drawing a blank. Sean Tobin’s 41st minute free left Simonstown leading by 0-9 to 0-6 heading into the final quarter.

The scoring tide continued to flow with Simonstown who had gone five points clear before Finnegan got O’Mahonys first post interval score, in the 52nd minute. David Nelson’s men fell five points in arrears on two further occasions.

O’Mahonys did have a penalty shout late on, but nothing came of it when Stephen MacGabhann was grounded. Late scores from Finnegan (free) and Gillespie softened the look of the scoreline from O’Mahonys’ perspective but were not enough to secure first point(s) of the campaign for David Nelson’s men.
