Navan O’Mahonys regained the Seamus Heaney Cup when holding on for a narrow win over visiting neighbours Simonstown Gaels on Friday night.
Navan O’Mahonys …….. 0-13
Simonstown Gaels ……. 0-10

Davy Nelson’s men laid the foundations for victory with a strong first-half scoring return that saw them lead by 0-11 to 0-5 at the interval.

Thereafter Simonstown outscored O’Mahonys by 0-5 to 0-2. Good defensive work by the home side, Niall McKeigue particularly impressive at full-back, had a major bearing on the outcome.

Team captain Marcus Brennan did his bit by keeping out Padraig McKeever’s 33rd minute goal attempt. With Shane Barry leading the way, Simonstown had the deficit down to two points, 0-9 to 0-11, heading into the final quarter.

Points from Henry Finnegan and top scorer Jake Regan secured O’Mahonys’ winning margin while a fine Ian O’Rourke effort wrapped up the scoring.

O’Mahonys put four points on the board in the opening 11 minutes with Gary O’Brien, Sean Keating and Jake Regan (two) registering.

McKeever erased Simonstown’s blank off the board shortly after. Eamonn O’Brien’s charges got to within two points of O’Mahonys on as many occasions during the remainder of the opening half.

Points from Shane Gillespie, Keating, Jake Regan and James O’Reilly saw O’Mahonys move six points clear by the break.

Proceeds from the fixture go to the Oncology Unit at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.
