O’Mahonys 2-9

St. Patrick’s 1-7

O’Mahony’s secured their seventh Division 1 league title with a 5 point victory over St. Patricks on Saturday evening.

Both teams were slow off the mark in slippy weather conditions and low scoring first half. Despite playing against the breeze in the first half, O’Mahony’s held their own and went in level at the break at four points a piece.

O’Mahony’s returned stronger following half time and the match was effectively decided in a scoring burst by O’Mahony’s in the 3rd quarter which saw both Alan Forde and Niall Mc Keague score two fine individual goals. Coupled with a Stephen Bray point, this saw O’Mahony’s quickly command a seven point lead, 2-5 to 0-4.

O’Mahony’s went ten points up with just seven minutes remaining, leading by 2-9 to 0-5. A late rally by St. Patrick’s saw them pull back 1-2 in the closing minutes of the game. However, O’Mahony’s had done enough to secure their first league victory since 1995.

O’Mahony’s saw superb performances especially from Stephen Bray, Niall McKeague and Kevin Reilly, who had just returned from representing Ireland in Australia.

Afterwards the Tommy Mooney Cup was presented to winning captain Barry Regan by Meath County Chairman, Barney Allen.
