O’Mahonys snatch late victory in Dunboyne!

Dunboyne 0-8 O’Mahonys 2-5

St Peter and Paul’s – Dunboyne was the venue for the O’Mahonys second, minor league match in division 1. A bitterly cold Sunday morning for football but this did not deter the Brews Hill side as they set about there business missing some key, regular players.

Scoring was low in the first half as both sides fought hard for posession. O’Mahonys were unfortunate to lose full forward Cormac McEntaggert through injury after only 5 mins of play. Captain Robbie Keeleghan and midfielder Conor Murphy opened the scores with two well taken frees for O’Mahonys in the first 25 mins before Dunboyne added their first point from play a few mins later. Corey Leddy added another fine point from play soon afterwards. Murphy sent another free over the bar on the halfway mark to see O’Mahonys lead by 0-4 to 0-3 at the interval.

The home side opened the second half with two points in the first 10 mins before corner forward Corey Leddy struck the net with 12 mins elapsed, having beaten the keeper. This put O’Mahonys back in front by two points. Substitute Conor Gleeson added a fine point from play after 25 mins had elapsed to maintain O’Mahonys 2 point lead going into the closing minutes of the match.

Some poor passes gave away possession to Dunboyne and they duly equaled the scores with two points from play in the last 5 mins. However, a free was awarded to O’Mahonys in the dying seconds and Conor Murphy duly dropped the ball into the goal area where a scramble occurred and the ball found the net! Difficult to see who had the last touch but ace corner forward Corey Leddy claimed this one as his with little dispute from his fellow team members as he had made a sizeable contribution to the winning of this match. This brought an end to a tough contest between two teams who have shared the spoils a number of times over the years.
