Navan O’Mahonys got their hoganstand.com SFC Group B campaign off to winning start on Saturday night at Pairc Tailteann where they finished with 15 points to spare over neighbours Seneschalstown.

Navan O’Mahonys ……. 3-14
Seneschalstown ……… 0-8

The foundations for this win were laid in the second quarter when O’Mahonys outscored Seneschalstown by 2-5 to 0-2. Early on the Brews Hill side made little headway when trying to take advantage of the strong wind blowing towards the clubhouse end.

The breakthrough arrived in the 19th minute when Shane Crosby was fouled by Seneschalstown ‘keeper David Lyons and Paddy Smyth expertly planted the subsequent penalty in the corner of the net.

That left the board reading 1-3 to 0-1 and David Nelson’s men upped a gear to reach half-time with an 11-point advantage. Shane Gillespie got the pick of the points in this phase of the game while David Bray’s brilliantly taken goal was created by good combination play from his brother Stephen as well as Smyth and Darragh Maguire.

Shane Crosby posted the last point of the half and the scoreboard read 2-8 to 0-3 at the break. Joe Sheridan pulled a point back for Seneschalstown within second of the resumption.

However, any chance of a Seneschalstown revival was quickly quelled with points from Shane Gillespie (three) and David Bray before Stephen Bray completed O’Mahonys goal tally in the 41st minute.

The scoring rate slackened in the final third of the hour when Joe Sheridan twice went close to pulling a goal back for Seneschalstown while his team mate Robert Ruddy had another attempt turned out for a 45 by Kevin Reilly.
