Navan O’Mahonys proved too strong for Seneschalstown in this SFC Group B opener at Pairc Tailteann on Friday night

Navan O’Mahonys ……. 2-17
Seneschalstown ……….. 2-5

The champions had the wherewithal to respond positively to the concession of goals at the start of each half and outscored Seneschalstown by 1-4 to 0-1 over the final third of the hour.

By the end eight different players registered scores from play for O’Mahonys – all six forwards and two subs. Kevin Reilly marked his return from injury with the Brews Hill outfit’s second goal that left it 2-15 to 2-4 after 50 minutes.

Newcomer Rory Maguire – another final quarter replacement – closed the scoring in stoppage time at the end of the game.

A pleasing feature of this display was the work rate display by all players and bodes were for the second round clash with Donaghmore-Ashbourne on Sunday, April 19.

Brian Sheridan netted for Seneschalstown from a penalty within a minute of the off. O’Mahonys responded to his well-struck effort with a quartet a points from as many different players.

O’Mahonys hit the front for the first time from a Ruairi O Coileain (free) six minutes in. The same player notched another pointed free after Joe Sheridan levelled matters for the second and final time.

When Alan Forde pointed in the 15th minute, all six O’Mahonys’ forwards had scored from play. David Nelson’s men gradually pulled clear capping a sequence of scores with a brilliantly taken Stephen Bray goal in the 26th minute.

O’Mahonys led by 1-9 to 1-3 at the break. Just over a minute into the second-half, Brian Sheridan flicked the ball to the net after Marcas Brennan kept out his initial effort.

It proved to be a temporary setback as the champions moved seven points clear by the end of the third quarter, a sequence highlighted by an excellent Shane Gillespie point, one of two he registered in quick succession around the mid-point of the second-half.

That left the board reading 1-14 to 2-4. O’Mahonys finished 11 points clear of Seneschalstown – managed by David Hosie – with Kevin Reilly netting the second goal within minutes of his introduction.
