Navan O’Mahonys made a surprise exit from the SFC when losing this quarter-final clash to Summerhill by the narrowest margin on Sunday evening.

Summerhill ……. 1-9 O’Mahonys …….. 1-8

O’Mahonys, who came into this fixture with a 100% win record, never led on this occasion having played against a strong wind in the opening half.

They lost Brian Dillon and sub Cormac McGuinness through injury during the opening 30 minutes. Thanks to points from Henry Finnegan and sub Darragh Maguire O’Mahonys were just four points off the pace, 0-2 to 0-6, at the break.

The ten minutes following the resumption was holders best phase of the game. Maguire got things going with his second point, within 40 seconds of the restart.

Though Summerhill replied quickly through Kevin Ryan, David Nelson’s men hit four points on the spin to be on level terms, for the only time, at 0-7 each after 40 minutes.

Points from Jake Regan (two, one free), Gary O’Brien and Stephen Bray (free) saw parity gained for the only time in the game.

Summerhill responded with a hammer blow to the holders, a Barry Dardis goal. A Michael Byrne point (free) left them four points clear, 1-8 to 0-7 after 43 minutes.

James O’Reilly (who replaced Dillon) become the second sub to score for O’Mahonys when pointing midway through the half.

A forward surge by Willie Ryan led to David Larkin landing Summerhill’s final score of the hour. David Bray created the opening for Jake Regan’s 54th minute goal that trimmed the deficit back to the minimum.

There were no further scores and Summerhill advance to a semi-final meeting with Rathkenny, who defeated Seneschalstown earlier in the day in the third quarter-final.
