SHC quarter-final: Defeat to Longwood is O’Mahonys’ lot

By Club

O’Mahonys finished eight points off the pace set by Longwood in this SHC quarter-final clash on Saturday evening at a wet Pairc Tailteann.

Longwood ……… 1-10

O’Mahonys ……… 0-5

Having fallen behind to an Aaron Ennis point in the opening minute, O’Mahonys were playing catch-up for the remainder of the hour. Worse was to follow for Tommy Loughran’s men with the concession of an eighth minute goal to Aaron Ennis’ rasping shot.

Playing towards the clubhouse end, with whatever assistance the elements offered, O’Mahonys bossed the remainder of the half. However, O’Mahonys’ cause was undermined by 11 first-half wides.

Defensively sound, they shut out the Longwood attack in the run-up to half-time.

Just two points in arrears, 0-3 to 1-2, at the break, O’Mahonys welcomed back Mikey Kelly for the resumption.

However, with Mickey Burke playing a key role Longwood resserted themselves with two points within 70 seconds of the restart.

David Quirke fourth point from a placed ball, in the 32nd minute, cut the deficit to a goal.

That was as good as it got for O’Mahonys Longwood outscored O’Mahonys by 0-6 to 0-1 over the remainder of the fixture to secure a semi-final clash with champions Kiltale.

The Navan-men’s sole response was their only score from play, Colin O’Rourke’s 37th minute point.

Longwood might have won by a wider margin but for Richie Hogan’s block on Mick Healy’s goal attempt.

Anthony Healy pointed the subsequent 65, the winners’ sole score from a placed ball and the final score of the game.
