Navan O Mahony’s 5-17

Trim 4-5

Navan O Mahony’s u14 girls were deserving champions when they beat a very strong Trim side in the Meath Ladies Football under 14 Division 2 Final in Bective last Saturday, with an astonishing 5-17 scoreline that any team would be proud of. Having met in the opening round of the championship and sharing the spoils in that match, both teams knew it was going to be a hard fought contest, and it took until the second half for O’Mahonys to pull away and secure victory.

The Brews Hill side got off to a fine start and dominated the opening stages of the game. They registered a goal and 4 points before Trim got on the scoreboard. However, the Trim girls were not fazed and fought back strongly to come back into contention. For 10 minutes, they dominated the play and went on to take the lead, which was exchanged a number of times in the second quarter. Navan O Mahonys came back into the game strongly with several nice points from Lizzie Collins, Ailbhe Leahy and Cliodhna Moore. A goal for Trim in the dying moments of the first half left the minimum margin between the sides at the break, with O’Mahonys going in with a single point advantage 3-8 to 4-4.

At this stage, it looked like being a very exciting and close game and the crowd of spectators felt it could go either way. However the wind favoured the Navan girls in the second half and they dominated all areas of the field. The defence showed real determination in preventing the Trim girls from scoring. Emma Forde and Michelle Beggy were excellent in the backs and goalie Niamh Moore gave another fine performance. In an amazing team effort, everyone played well allowing Trim to score only a single point in the second half, while up front, the Navan girls scored 2-9 to pull away convincing winners.

Meath County Board Fixtures Committee Representative Dominic Murtagh presented the cup to Michelle Beggy, the winning O’Mahonys captain after the game.

Well done to all the girls and also a special thanks to all the mentors and parents for all the time and effort contributed.
